Mounting Material Calculator

Uses resin powder or pellets (phenolic, acrylic, epoxy). Typical cycle: 150-180°C at 3,000-4,500 psi, ~5 min cure plus ~3 min cooling under pressure. Includes 10% safety margin for material loss.

About Mounting Material Calculation

The amount of mounting material needed depends on:

  • Mold size: Standard molds are 1", 1.25", 1.5", or 2" diameter
  • Sample size: Larger samples require less mounting material
  • Mounting type: Castable mounting may require more material due to shrinkage
  • Safety margin: Extra material accounts for handling loss and ensures complete filling

Tip: For compression mounting, resin powders and pellets are typically sold by weight. For castable mounting, liquid resins are sold by volume and mixed with hardener at the manufacturer's specified ratio. This calculator provides both units. The gram estimate assumes a density of ~1 g/cm³; actual mounting resins range from about 1.0 to 1.4 g/cm³ (glass-filled grades are densest), so check the manufacturer's data when weighing powder.
